Who is the Venus of Willendorf?
The Venus of Willendorf is dated to approximately the same period as the cave paintings at Lascaux in France. Her great age and pronounced female forms quickly established the Venus of Willendorf as an icon of prehistoric art. She is included in introductory art history textbooks as the example of Paleolithic art. Some feel that her nude form is a symbol of fertility, the Earth Mother or Earth Goddess.
