About the Venus of Willendorf
The Venus of Willendorf is dated to approximately the same period as the cave paintings at Lascaux in France. Her great age and pronounced female forms quickly established the Venus of Willendorf as an icon of prehistoric art. She is included in introductory art history textbooks as the example of Paleolithic art. Some feel that her bountiful, nude form is a symbol of fertility, the Earth Mother or Earth Goddess.
A Few Words from the Artist
Long ago in a time referred to as college I sat in a dark room watching as a professor showed us prehistoric art. When the image of the Venus of Willendorf flashed up on the screen I smiled. Who inspired this small talis(wo)man? The professor went on to explain the why and wherefores of her discovery and her importance in the prehistoric art scene. Many of my classmates where not impressed. I fell in love with the exultation of WOMAN, the beautiful rolls of flesh - her size a testament to her purpose, to bring fertility.
Jump ahead to my life as a mother and artist. When I started making the soaps I pulled out my art history book and showed the Venus to my children, explaining how during a time so long ago she was an important symbol of fertility and womanhood. My children responded with such simple words from such a heartfelt place: "Mom, you like her because she looks like you, and she is famous."
